Pandemic unemployment assistance

The Mass. Dept. of Unemployment Assistance rolled out a new category of unemployment benefits, called Pandemic Unemployment Assistance. For the first time, people in the following categories are now eligible for unemployment benefits.:

- Gig economy workers, such as Uber and Lyft drivers
- Self-employed individuals
- Independent contractors
- Individuals who didn't make enough money (a total of $5,100 over the preceding four quarters) to qualify for traditional unemployment benefits

As with traditional unemployment benefits, individuals whose hours have been significantly reduced are eligible, so it's possible for someone to qualify for unemployment benefits even if they haven't been laid off.

The Dept. of Unemployment Assistance now has web pages in multiple languages to request a call-back from a DUA employee. Click this link, and scroll down to "Unemployment contact form".
