HUD Announces that the Recovery Act’s HPRP Has Helped

More than One Million Americans Avoid Homelessness

From The USICH

On Tuesday, HUD Secretary Donovan announced a major milestone for HPRP.The $1.5 billion initiative funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, has prevented or ended homelessness for 1 million Americans.

Since 2009, HPRP has helped communities keep families in their homes and quickly find places for those already in shelters or on the streets to call home. HPRP equips local grantees with the tools they need to make a difference for families in a pinch – tools like short- and medium-term rental assistance, help with security deposits and utility payments, legal services, and case management.

“At a time when so many families were at the brink of homelessness due to the economic crisis, HPRP was able to step in and provide the assistance needed to keep families safe and off the streets,” said Secretary Donovan. “I am proud to announce this historic milestone and to continue to work on strategies with my partners within the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness to end homelessness for all Americans.”
